Yellow Crocus

Yellow Crocus Audiobook

Humanity, love, and relation were hard to find in the era of slavery. The slaves were treated like animals and they were never granted rights equal to an average human being. Laila Ibrahim takes us to that part of history once again through this novel. Lisbeth happens to be the daughter of a slave owner and when she was born she was allotted a nurse named Mattie who was a slave of her father.

Mattie was separated from her baby boy because she had orders to take care of Lisbeth. The woman kept a good watch on all the needs of the little girl and when Lisbeth grew up she developed a liking for Mattie’s family. Lisbeth started going to the place where the slaves were kept and this humanitarian attitude of the girl started a new era in that part of the world.

The slave quarters were not for the masters but when Lisbeth went there, she saw everything with her own eyes. It was her father who was responsible for this condition of the slaves and it was surely not justice. Different from Paper Wife and Golden Poppies this is the book about the ways in which black people were treated.

In the past, There was no justice for them because the laws were also favoring the upper class only. Black people had no right to property and they were not allowed to leave the house of the master of their own will. Bahni Turpin’s narration is quite well-adjusted with this book because the accent of the narrator is perfect for such dramas. The narrator knows how to keep the difference between the characters of the masters and slaves
