When to Fear the Living

When to Fear the Living is a ghost story, romantic suspense, contemporary fantasy, and paranormal fiction novel written by B. L. Brunnemer. It is the third book of The Veil Diaries series. It is followed by Whispers from the Dead. Brunnemer is all about urban fantasy novels bordering on suspenseful thrillers to classic horror stories. The narration is performed by Kris Koscheski and Carla Mercer-Meyer. The performance is far better this time and they bring Alexis and the other characters to life.

Alexis Delaney is an average 17-year-old, except for the fact that she can talk to the dead. She can see them and help them move on. In that case, she isn’t so typical after all. However, the dead can’t move on because the Viel is shut off and the Way is closed. Thus, with nowhere to go, they are camping out on her law. Meanwhile, Alexis is trying to open the Way, manage school, and deal with feelings for two of her best friends.

Nonetheless, things are not as they seem. They are getting creepier as time goes on. Notes have been showing up in her locker room since she got back from Christmas vacation. She’s getting scared; however, she takes comfort knowing that no one can take on Zeke. That’s what she thinks, and she might be wrong.

This story has a lot of twists and turns and they keep things fresh and interesting. The teenage behavior of Alexis can get a bit weird, especially for mature readers. Her thoughts are not always rational and coherent. Nonetheless, Lexi and the boys make it a fun and light read.
