The Will

The Will is the first book in the contemporary romance series referred to as Magdalene. It is written by Kristen Ashley. She is a world-renowned author of more than sixty romance books. A couple of those books that you should see are Dream Chaser and Rock Chick Renegade. This is the unusual romance story of globetrotter Josephine Malone and retired boxer Jake Spear and how one person is trying their best to bring them together.

Hollis McCarthy is the narrator of this book. Her performance in this is just acceptable. It doesn’t prevent you from enjoying the book, but it doesn’t enhance the experience either. Her female voice is satisfactory but her male voice doesn’t fulfill the criteria of good narration. She needs to put more practice in her masculine voice.

Josie Malone knows the only person she can trust is her grandmother. Because of her trust issues, she has developed a shell around herself, a disguise to keep others away. She then goes on to lead a globetrotting lifestyle bordering around the music and fashion elite. She comes across Jake Spear, a retired boxer who has made bad decisions regarding his life. He also has been careless in giving her heart to the right person. Now, there is one person that adores both of them. They will do everything in their power to bring them together.

Josie and Jake are interesting characters. There is a lot of focus on the side characters. The couple is the complete opposite of each other and the family dynamic is also nice. However, the story does seem to drag on in the middle. Josie is a kind of unlikeable character but she grows on you as she comes out of her shell. Overall, it is a nice book where characters are mature and make realistic decisions.
