The era which is selected by Sofia Segovia for this novel is the era of the Mexican Revolution. Also, it was the same time period in which the region was attacked by influenza on a large scale. Thus nothing was peaceful and calm in Mexico at that time and it was the time when people started losing faith.

The baby which the society named Simonopio in this novel was found all wrapped up in bees. The entire body of the baby boy was covered under the veil of bees and different people comprehended the situation differently. Some thought that the boy had a connection with the devil while others thought that he was a boy with special powers.

The Morales family adopted the boy because they were not thinking in that way rather they wanted to save a precious life. At a very young age, the boy lost his eyesight and became blind. However, when he became blind, he started having visions which were proved true later on. He was able to predict different things before they had taken place in the world.

At this stage, the story surpasses Tears of Amber in the portrayal of thrill because it has two narrators i.e Xe Sands and Angelo Di Loreto. The character of the boy is different as compared to other characters on which the author has worked before this one. The protective layer of the bees around the boy also makes the situation different in this novel. The boy never shows any evil intentions in the novel still the opinion of different people about him does not change at all.
