Joe Talbert was a college student and he had a very modest goal which was for completing his writing assignment in English class. The task given to him was to interview a stranger and then write a short biography of that person. The deadlines for the assignment were looming and Joe decided to go to a nursing home nearby so that he could find his willing subject there. Then the time came when he met Carl Iverson and very soon, nothing at all in his life of Joe was the same ever again. Carl was a dying veteran of the Vietnam War and also a convicted murderer. He had only a few months left to live and he got parole on a medical basis to a nursing home after spending three decades in prison for the serious crimes of murder and rape.
Just as Joe wrote about the life of Carl, especially about his bravery in Vietnam, he just couldn’t reconcile the heroic efforts of the soldier with the dreadful acts of the convict. Joe was aided by Lila, his skeptical brother and he threw himself into finding the truth in the matter.
The Life We Bury is the best novel by Allen Askens and it became a bestseller in USA Today. The book has been published in 26 different languages.
