The story is about three women who have a kind of emptiness in their minds and they want to get out of a mess. Firstly it is the young woman named Skeeter who has just graduated from the university and she has high hopes about her future life.

Her mother however has other plans for her, she wants Skeeter to marry a rich lad and get settled in life. Skeeter does not like the idea of her mother also she is worried about the maid who used to be very close to her since her childhood. Minny i.e the third character happens to be a friend of Aibileen and she has a big mouth which has not allowed her to get settled in life.
