Story is not unique or new because it is again Horus’ issue but the way James Swallow presents it all the time is the thing which really creates a difference. Narration by Jonathan Keeble cannot be negated as well because if anyone can narrate to perfection than it is no one other than Jonathan. The Death Guard has played its role in the wars between planets; under the leadership of Captain Garro this group has saved the lives of many innocent people around the galaxy.
However one thing which they were not ready for or perhaps were not expecting was the treachery of Horus. Single act of Horus has resulted in the death of many soldiers and more men can die if Garro fails to reach in time.
At the initial section of the story Garro has somehow been able to get hold of a ship and he is moving towards Terra as fast as he could. There he plans to tell the emperor about the situation so that he can take precautionary measures before it is too late. The ship at the time of flight got hit by the enemy and reaching the destination is apparently impossible. Further Garro and his team get stuck in a place which is full of dark forces that are always waiting for such easy prey.
Dark forces in Star Trek: Picard: The Dark Veil and Fear to Tread were really mind-blowing and this book has scarier characters. Garro on several occasions looked terrorized by the monsters that start to surround his ship. Reaching Terra looks an impossible task for one broken ship.
