The author wanted to stretch the series to another part but he restricted it to a trilogy because he never wanted the series to lose its impression. The impression of the series will surely become permanent in the mind of the listeners because the struggle which the author has talked about here is surely epic.
Lyra and Will never thought that they were born for adventure because they were living an average life initially and no one prepared them for the big journey. Then their fate brought them face to face with something great. They are going to a gray-lit world with the help of a few allies that they found on their way.
The return might not be possible if they fail to achieve their goal but that was one risk that they had to take on this occasion. Dr. Mary Malone is busy in the creation of the amber spyglass when she is attacked by an assassin out of nowhere. There are other people like Lord Asriel who have their own agendas to fulfill so they are not worried about the future.
Such events hint towards books of the kind The Ruby in the Smoke but the ending of this book is unique. We can say that every book which the author has written and narrated is with an awesome ending. Surely the image of a book or the entire series depends on its ending. If the ending is not accurate then the impression could be lost forever.
