Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever

Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever is a historical romance and Regency fiction novel written by Julia Quinn. It is the first book of the Bevelstoke series. It is followed by What Happens in London, the second of the series. Julia is a #1 New York Times bestseller who is one of the sixteen members of the Romance Writers of America’s Hall of Fame. Her books are read all over the world and they’ve been translated into more than 29 languages. If you want to read more from her, check out The Duke and I.

The narration of this audiobook is performed by Jenny Sterlin. She is a fine narrator but can’t hold a candle to Rosalyn Landor, the narrator who does most of Julia’s audiobooks. She isn’t a good choice for this genre and doesn’t make it sound natural.

Miranda Cheever showed no signs of Great Beauty even when she was 10. Nonetheless, she got her hand kissed by Nigel Bevelstoke, the handsome Viscount Turner and he promised her that he would return for her. She would one day grow into herself and she would be as beautiful as she was smart.

The next years were quite kind to Miranda but they were cruel to Turner. The more beautiful she became, the lonelier Turner got. However, Miranda remembers the promise of the past, and she won’t let the love of her destiny slip away from her hand.

Even though the narration is weak, the story itself is quite strong. The leading woman was far from perfect, but she appeared real enough that people could relate to her and her experiences. It is a great experience for the audience when the author explores both the feelings and personalities of the characters.
