Michael Connelly usually draws characters that are on a mission to help others because it is supposed to be their duty. We have seen agents like Harry Bosch in Desert Star and Echo Park: Harry Bosch Series, Book 12 who worked hard for the safety of others. Pierce is also a bit like Harry but he is not a detective rather he is just a man who needs help and when he listens to Lilly he thinks that she needs his help instead.
Pierce used to be the one who was getting everything very quickly and when his business went down he was thrown out by his girlfriend too. For the first time, he saw this side of human nature because he had not experienced such a thing ever. At first, he thought that it would be temporary and he would be able to get over all of it within no time but he was wrong in his approach.
He had to change his apartment because of a lack of funds and he becomes sure that he would not be able to save his company either. Jonathan Davis’ voice informs us about a telephone call that Pierce gets in his new apartment. The call was for a girl named Lilly and apparently, she was the kind of woman whom everybody wanted.
Pierce leaves all the important things in his life and starts looking for that girl because he thinks that she needs his help and she would be able to help him in return. The young man completely forgets about all the problems in his life because he thinks that in the presence of that girl he would be able to start a new life.
