Rowan didn’t want to be something else instead of a smoke jumper in her life. Her father was the ideal figure in front of her from the early days of her life and she wanted to be just like him. Diving into the smoke and fire all the time is what Rowan does best in her life because she happens to be the daughter of the legendary firefighter named Tripp.

Her father still teaches other smoke jumpers how to jump precisely toward the target and then how to get out alive after the completion of the mission. Rowan has been taught one important thing in her career i.e never to fall in love with a fellow jumper because this complicates things.

She strictly follows the rule, especially after the incident she has seen a year ago. Gulliver happens to be one of the new jumpers who come to training camp of Tripp. Gulliver wanted to be a trained smoke jumper and he was showing complete commitment to his task too. Then he met the daughter of his trainer and he thought that he could show commitment to more than one thing at a time.

Rowan happens to be a typical heroine of Nora Roberts’ world, the kind we saw in Identity or Year One. At first, she shows her reluctant behavior towards Gulliver, and then she finally falls for his love. Though she tries to stop herself so that she can follow the simple rules but she fails in that effort. Finally, she admits that she too feels for Gulliver in the same way and cannot leave him at any cost.
