Commissar Ciaphas Cain is a hero whom everyone praises in the army and that’s why he has been given an entire regiment under his control. So far everything was going fine for him until a call of duty appeared. He and his regiment are sent to the Ice world as it is said that miners are disappearing from the caves without a trace. The cold weather of the planet was already ample to destroy any normal being and the appearance of the orks was another sign of destruction.
The orks were hunting down the miners and then they started doing the same thing to the men who were part of the regiment. Cain never wanted to be a part of this mission because he was not sure about the enemies on this occasion. As Cain and his men dig deep, they find something more dangerous than they were ready for. An old evil present in the depth of the ice world decides to come back to the surface and enjoy his feast.
So there are two enemies which the troops have to deal with along with the severe cold weather which just becomes more and more intense. Sandy Mitchell made the main character toil in Ciaphas Cain: Death or Glory and here once again Cain is in a broken condition.
The style that was there in For the Emperor is followed by the author as well. The longish list of narrators including Stephen Perring, Penelope Rawlins, and Emma Gregory have decorated the book with their voices. The narrators have worked on the same pitch and haven’t allowed their voices to mix.
