Kaylin Neya never wanted to get into the world of magic, this is one thing that she hates the most. Though she is linked to the world of mages and charlatans she does not want to see them anymore. Her destiny is fixed and she does not want to think about those things as it is better to leave certain things aside. Kaylin is on to another complicated case, this is one way of busying herself in another type of affairs which are non-magical types. Case of theft brings her close to a stolen box which is said to have strange powers.
The box was stolen from Elani Street and since then no sign of it was found. Elani Street happens to be the place where Mages and Charlatans co-exist. Anything connected to that place of course is not what Kaylin wants but now she gets stuck with the box.
If anyone opens the box then darkness will get unleashed once again on the world. So handing over the box to anyone is not a good idea at all and keeping it with herself will make the life of Kaylin just like hell. The woman realizes that someone has intentionally brought her close to this box with no keyhole and somehow her destiny is linked to it.
Khristine Hvam does not lose grip on the narration anywhere and it has enhanced the level of the novel. Cast in Conflict and The Emperor’s Wolves will come into the mind of the old fans during the continuation of this novel. Michelle Sagara’s writing style has not changed much over the years and there is nice stability found in the writings of the author.
