Life is all about interest and the moment we lose interest in life the boredom just kills us. Iain M. Banks created a strange society in book one of the series in which the human and machine work well together. The author named it as “The Culture” which has the best of both worlds present in it. The Culture has produced a lot of Game Players over the years and these players not only earn name through the games but they also earn money which makes it awesome.
Among the legendary players, there is one named Gurgeh that has been on the top since the day he had set foot in the gaming world. No one has been able to defeat him and that has made him quite a champion in the Culture. However, very few notice that with every win the smile on Gurgeh’s face just starts disappearing.
For the hero winning becomes a daily routine thus he gets bored of this routine stuff. In order to find something new for himself he goes to the Empire of Azad where the game is not only difficult but it also is with a big reward. Peter Kenny narrates the prize of this game in loud tone as the winner gets the chance to rule the empire.
Winning is not easy just like it was seen in Consider Phlebas and Use of Weapons but for the bigger goal the main character is ready to take any risk. Whether it is the threats of murder or an insult on the face Gurgeh gets prepared for everything. Life changing game starts for Gurgeh and if he survives he would achieve the highest award.
