At the start of the forgotten realms, the listener observed Drizzt in an entirely different state of mind. He wasn’t fighting or trying to free himself from the mess rather he was thinking about the Companions of the Hall. It was observed that he through his thoughts and memories discussed each of his friends in detail. It was a side of Drizzt that was never portrayed during Homeland and Exile. That state has also ended now because Drizzt is back with his friends but the problem is that his friends are also stuck with him in the Spellplague.
It is a troublesome time for the group of friends as R.A. Salvatore brings the story to a close. The companions are fully aware that their strength might not be able to save the day this time so they go in search of the priest Cadderly. The priest is said to have the solution for this uprising problem but going to him becomes tough when crystal shard emerges again out of nowhere.
Mark Bramhall i.e the narrator of this book narrates Drizzt’s feelings very accurately when he hears about the crystal shard. Drizzt thought that the crystal shard was destroyed long ago but it was not true at all. Fighting with all of these situations and troubles makes land beneath Drizzt’s feet tremble.
He cannot decide whether he should be worried about the safety of the companions or the rest of the world which is turning into ashes slowly. Writing the end of such a series was difficult for Salvatore but he is the sole author who could have done it with precision.
